I bought these Miley leggings at Wal-mart because I thought they would make cute pants for Sam. As much as I love gray leopard print I just don’t think I could pull them off, Samster on the other hand rocks animal prints like nobody’s business.
If you’re just starting out sewing this is a GREAT starter project, I would say you could do this project for anywhere from newborn – 3T. The beauty is that the majority of the baby pants legs are the bottom of your leggings so lots less sewing! Woohoo!
Step 1: Cut it out
You’re going to use the entire bottom legging hem as the bottom of your baby pant legs. Below is the basic shape you’re cutting out for each leg. The easiest way to get this shape is to lay out a pair of pants that currently fit your baby, add 2 1/2″ to the top of the pants. (This is for the waistband) If you want pics of how to lay out your baby pants for a pattern look at this tutorial.Step 2: Stitch from the crotch up
Pin together the back from the crotch up to the waistband, with the right sides together
Stitch and then repeat for the front half. (Note – it’s a good idea to use a small setting zig zag stitch on knits…aka stretchy fabrics)Step 3 – Sew a waistband
If you don’t already know how to sew a basic elastic waistband here’s a tutorial for baby pants I did that has detailed instructionsThat’s it! Told ya it was easy.

your blog is my favorite to read, and when you make pants you crack me up. How is the sewing of the crotch working for you? I thought you should know, its a lot easier to place one leg inside the other leg and then sew. there is a tutorial on my blog if you are interested.

You are amazing. How do you find time to do all of these projects and tutorials?! I love the print, too fabulous! I was going to mention the put the pant leg inside the other like the previous post. Then you can sew the crotch seam all in one easy step. Keep the project coming. As soon as I finish all of these curtains I am working on I will finally have some time to work on something fun! I've got a big bag of old clothes that I want to try refashion into somethings for the kids. I'm so excited!
