My Haul: Makeup

Please tell me I’m not the last person to hear about a ‘haul’ video? Please.

My sisters & I were online shopping & they kept talking about checking for ‘haul videos’ to see what the clothes we were thinking of buying looked like. After realizing that we were most certainly NOT speaking about some sort of transportation videos I finally asked & they showed me these youtube videos girls their age make where they basically show you all the crap they just bought. Apparently the good ones leave you feeling like you just got a clothing review on a real live person. I guess I get it. (For example, I’ve heard this girl is pretty good & considering that video has over 826,000 views I’m gonna say girlfriend is doing something right) By the way, I feel like this is terrible to say but teenage girls drive me BUH-NANAS. I wanted to smack that kid. Isn’t that awful? I need to get over that considering I have two that are going to be all “OMGOSH LIKE FOR REAL!” before I know it. But I digress, my issue, not yours…

These haul videos did lead me to something pretty awesome though which is the purpose of this post, I had to share her with you asap, LISA ELDRIDGE. Omgosh, I’m OBSESSED. Did you see this pic that P instagrammed of me? These are the videos I was neglecting my husband to watch. Apparently she’s a celebrity makeup artist (Jessica Biel & Scarlett Johansson to name a few) & she does these fantastic video tutorials on everything from how to do a smokey eye to the best red lipstick for your skin tone. It doesn’t hurt that she has a ridiculously soothing British accent, she should seriously consider making videos where she just reads bedtime stories, but her tips just make sense. All in all, she’s a great teacher if you’d like to expand your makeup routine/rut a bit. In fact, her videos have inspired me to up my game, who knew I loved a baby cateye or a fuschia lip?? I mean seriously, if you told me, miss lip gloss, a year ago that I’d be completely comfortable wearing bright red or fuschia lipstick I would’ve thought you were a crackhead but much like crack, or so I’ve heard, it’s kind of fun once you try it!

I’ve had a handful of you requesting I put up a video of how I do my makeup for the LPM YouTube videos & since I have all these new goodies to share I thought I’d kill two birds with one stone, and don’t you dare make fun of my no makeup face! I either have really big man spuds for putting this out there or I’m just dumb. Perhaps a little of both.

Say Whaa?? A video review of the AIR CURLER!

Have you seen the Air Curler infomercial yet?? Trust me, you’d know it if you’d seen it. (scroll down to view it) Sam saw it & oh how that sweet innocence soaked up the promise of quick & easy curls like the little pink sponge she is. She begged & pleaded for me to order it & I have to admit, I was pretty curious myself. So fast forward $14.95 plus some obscene amount of “shipping & processing” and the ‘Air Curler’ was ours for the taking. BUT….

DOES IT REALLY WORK???

And just in case you missed the joy of the original commercial…

Also, do you know what I noticed after watching this again? At no point do they show the hair go from straight to curled all in one shot. Either there’s some sort of quick edit or the shot starts with the hair already in the curler where it easily could’ve been slipped in pre-curled. Shady.

DIY Elastic Hair Ties

I’m sure you’ve seen them, they’re all over the place. Pretty elastic hair ties that usually come in a pack of 4 or 5. Once you used them you probably fell in love too. Not only are they an updated, more stylish, version of the regular ponytail holder but they don’t snag or dent your hair like their skinnier cousins. They’re also fabulous for little girls with sensitive heads since they don’t get tangled like the rubber ones. I wonder though if you’ve ever been as offended as I have when you turn that package of pretty ties over to see how much it costs? $6, $8, heck, this 5 pack from JCrew costs $12.50!! I’m gonna let you in on a little secret here…those cost them all of a nickel to make. If that.

Here’s the good news…you can make them too. The amount of crafty skill they require? ZERO. If you can tie a knot you can make these.

The ties above are made of one of two kinds of elastic, fold over or stretch elastic by the yard. Some are plain, some are ruffled, a few are velvet & one is even made of elastic lace. I found all of my elastic at Michael’s, JoAnn’s & the best selection was from G Street Fabric. (At Michael’s however the elastic was located in the jewelry section, I believe it was $1.99 for a package of it) No craft store nearby? There are tons of options online, in fact just a quick search of “glitter elastic” on Etsy turned up dozens of options, one yard could easily make 4 hair ties. Next time I think I’m going to order in bulk from this site, I’ve heard you can ask them to mix up the selection so you get a little bit of everything.

Ok, so are you ready for this? Pay close attention.

Step 1: Cut a 9″ strip of elastic
Step 2: Fold the strip in half
Step 3: Tie the ends in a knot, singe ends with a lighter to keep from fraying
Step 4: Singe ends with a lighter to keep the edges from fraying

Told you it was easy.

How fun would this be for a cute craft activity at a little girl’s birthday party or heck, even a bachelorette party! A handful of them in a pretty mesh baggie would make a sweet ‘just because’ gift for a girlfriend too.

Oh, & in case you’re new to the world of elastics this what the two look like…

So am I alone here or do you also adore these little ties but think the price tag is the most ridiculous thing you’ve ever seen?? Have I tempted you into making your own?

Tween Bedroom Makeover

Our neighbor, whom I adore & want to be just like when I grow up, has the most amazing daughter, Rachel. Rachel is kind, polite, sweet & yet strong. She’s exactly what I hope my girls are like when they get to be middle schoolers. There’s one problem with Rachel though, she’s going through a phase that I’ve been dreading since giving birth to Samster. She’s growing up. I believe they call it a “tween”.

The dolls are starting to collect dust & ‘mommy’ becomes ‘mom’. Sigh. Along with that her adorable girl’s room just doesn’t quite fit anymore…that’s where I come in. Her mom Kelly asked if I’d help makeover Rachel’s bedroom into something a little more grown up but still loads of fun & personality. The only stipulation, it had to be TEAL. I totally jumped at the challenge of course, I had such a great time making over Sam’s bedroom & have been dying to do it again!

Normally when I decorate a room (and here’s my full disclosure, I am NOT a professional decorator nor do I claim to be) it starts with a favorite item that inspires me & I work from there out but with Rachel’s room, and with Sam’s, the inspiration was a color. In that case you first have to start with one important decision…will that color be on the walls or will it be the basis for the decor?

If your child has a favorite color than you might just assume that you need to paint the walls that color. There’s one problem with that, it really limits everything else in the room. For example, Sam really wanted pink walls when I painted her room but I knew if I did that I wouldn’t be able to use the fun pink rose bedding or glittery pink picture frames…it’d be pink overload. The same goes with teal, or really any strong color. Not to say strong colored walls aren’t possible, they can be totally & utterly amazing, as long as your cool with keeping the rest of the room pretty neutral. I scoured Pinterest and came up with two idea boards to show Rachel so she could choose which route to go, teal walls or teal decor.

Kelly & Rachel were supposed to come over my house yesterday but I had to cancel at the last minute because we’re currently under possible Hand, Foot & Mouth quarantine. Sophie Monster has the sores/bumps all over her rump, a low fever & is the grumpiest clingiest little human. I have a bad sore throat & P is also not quite himself. Soph has a pediatrician appointment today so we can find out for sure. Cross your fingers it’s just a diaper rash/common cold coincidence. My girls are supposed to be in a fun camp this week & for now I’m keeping them home. I don’t know who’s more disappointed, me or them.

Sea Shell Crafts that don’t make you an old lady

We’re at the beach. And it’s a beautiful beach, it also happens to be a beach with a fairly decent assortment of seashells. It’s impossible not to do, I even catch my husband doing it, “Ooo! Look! I found a striped one!” And *plop* it goes into the bucket. By the time vacation is over you have a huge ziploc baggie full of extremely prized, albeit somewhat ordinary, seashells. What to do, what to do. In my house they’ve occasionally made their way into a glass bowl with a bit of a sand in the bottom or perhaps a cool jar with a candle but after a few weeks of it sitting on my shelf I always come to the same conclusion, “that is so old lady looking”. This time however I’m going into seashell hunting with a plan, I will not be forced into making the decision to either age my home decor 30 years or be plagued with guilt when I stealthily throw away my kid’s ocean finds a few weeks after we’ve been home. THERE MUST BE ANOTHER WAY! Turns out, there is…

*The sweetheart of the craft world, Disney from Ruffles & Stuff, created this lovely red painted seashell rose for Delia Creates. I love that she mounted them on a rustic wood block for contrast.

*Only Martha would think to use a large scallop or clam shell to make a chic soapdish. I’m totally doing this.

*This is a pretty awesome way to beautify otherwise bleh oyster shells. They don’t give exact instructions but I don’t see why you cant work the shells around a styrofoam base & adhere with a good adhesive.

*I’m not sure if this is exactly what they did here but it gives me an idea, why not gold or silver leaf, or heck, even glitter, a large shell & then attach an ornament hanger to the backside with a strong adhesive? I’m all about ornaments that evoke special memories…

*LOVE these simple shell garlands for a summer pergola. (BTW, if you need some major swoon click on that link to see the most goregous cali beach wedding, ugh, why can’t I go back in time & be friends with them?)

*A succulent & a shell…why did I not think of this?

*Ok, don’t kill me but I would totally sport these in a messy braided summer updo. Is that wrong?

*I don’t know about your beach but these might be a bit hard to find. Don’t they make phenomenal tea lights though?

Speaking of, want to make one of these but are utterly landlocked? Do a search on Etsy, they make it stupid easy to get a bag of fabulously sorted shells delivered to your door.

Or if all else fails go for the fierce shell jaguar lawn guardians. Can’t go wrong there.

Happy Birthday!!!

I just couldn’t resist the cheesy holiday graphic, forgive me.

It’s time again for our annual beach vacation where we relocate to an island just off the west coast of Florida. All of my family is here & P is popping in & out. Which at first I wanted to be mad that he wasn’t going to be here the entire time but then I realized that this wonderful vacation wouldn’t ever be possible if he didn’t work so hard for us. I’m trying to lay off the ‘you work too much’ tangent, consider it my mid-year resolution.

I know most of you are on vacay too because I’ve seen your wonderful Instagram pics! Here’s to no one breaking into our houses because they know we’re not home!! Except for us of course because we left a heavily armed housesitter there when P is not. Seriously, she’s packing some major heat. Don’t even think about it.

We’re all going to grill out & run around with sparklers like everyone else in America will be doing today. Gotta love it. I’m going to make these caramel apple cheesecake bars I found on Pinterest via The Girl Who Ate Everything, how great would these other bbq tidbits be?

Return of the Mack! It’s Totally Tulip Throwback Tutorial Time

A+ for alliteration with that title right?

When I say “Puffy” what’s the first word that comes to your mind? If you didn’t say “Paint” then perhaps you need a little schoolin:

I don’t know about you but those special effects just BLEW. MY. MIND.

Back in the day I was the puffy paint QUEEN. There was no undershirt in my house that was safe from me when I had a pack of puffy paints in my hand. In fact, perhaps that’s when my crafting fashion obsession began, hmm, must remember to mention ‘puffy paint breakthrough’ to my shrink.

Regardless, all of that neon, graphic shapes & day-glo squiggles definitely hold a special place in my heart & when Tulip Paints came to me with a project to bring back a bit of 80’s crafting style I was more than game!

Tell me she doesn’t have “Kelly Kapowski” written all over her!

Seriously, you have to try out a project using Tulip Dimensional Fabric Paints (aka what we affectionately nicknamed ‘puffy paint’ back in the day) & their Tulip Soft Fabric Paint (an absolute staple in my craft stash). In fact, after I texted my girlfriend a pic of Sam’s new dress she went bananas & insisted we have a ‘Puffy Paint Party’ (with some sort of throwback cocktails of course) ASAP! How much fun would that be??

In the meantime while we wait for our totally awesome party to occur how about I show you how I made Samster’s awesomely rad duds.

Sam’s dress is comprised of two parts, the decorated tank & a skirt made out of a large t-shirt & a few yards of tulle. If you’re not up for sewing however you can achieve the same Lauper-esque look by pairing your painted top with any tutu type skirt.

1. First up, I got inspired. If that video wasn’t enough to get you jazzed then take a look at the ilovetocreate blog, the pictures in there CRACK.ME.UP.

2. I broke my tank design into three sections & began with a checkerboard across the center. I cut a quick square out of some random foam I had lying around & practiced stamping it on a piece of a paper first. Soon enough I had a neon yellow checkerboard that was the perfect background for some random shapes, zig-zags & squiggles. Sound familiar?

Note to self: Find black biker shorts & wear as regular shorts with an oversized cropped tee. Then ignore first note to self.

3. For the ‘peacock feathers’ I started off with a foam cutout just like before except this time I stamped it onto a swirl design of Tulip Dimensional Paint & then onto the tank. As long as you don’t press too hard you should get the same swirl-ish impression. The inside little paisley was one of my favorite things to do with the dimensional paint, I totally had a flashback about how you can outline a design & then fill it in (or vice versa) & the dimensional paints will hold up against eachother. Unless you choose to swirl them which I actually did with the center heart at the end. Add some thin whispy yellow lines around the edge & you can check crazy, neon, peacock-ish design off of your list.

4. The final top section was a throwback technique that I know you’ve done before, I know it! Splatter painting fabric paint. First I messily drew a few diaganol lines across the empty space & then went to town with some quick light sprinkles. Either the Tulip Dimensional Paint or the regular Tulip Soft Fabric Paint would work great for this.

That’s about it for crazy fun part. Aw, I know. Now just the regular fun part. Sewing directions really shouldn’t have to follow puffy paint, it’s just not fair.

I figured out my skirt pieces by laying a dress flat that I both liked the length of & the fit/flare of the skirt on top of the fabric that needed to be cut. (since it was a shirt it was already doubled, if you’re working with yardage you’ll need to either double it or cut two) Next I subtracted the length of the tank & marked that spot on the dress with a clear ruler. After that it’s as simple as carefully cutting around the edges. Sew the side seams right sides together so you now have a tube. I then cut the tulle the same way except I roughly doubled the length so I’d have plenty of room to gather. I wanted pouf! After you gather your tulle tube so it’s the same circumference as your knit one stitch the hem of the tank right on top of the skirt pieces. I then used hem tape to iron some hot pink lace elastic on top of the tank/skirt seam. *Tip* Learn from my mistake, a hot iron & tulle are NOT friends, if you iron it, it will melt. And that will suck.That’s it my friend! I have to say, I LOVED making this dress. Getting crazy with the puffy paint totally took me back to my childhood & I guess that means I’m pretty old too because Sam’s babysitter thought it was ‘totally retro’. Oh well, perhaps this campaign can kickstart a love of puffy paint that will live on forevvverrr!

Cats & Vacuums

Some days you’re the bug & some days you’re the windshield.

Or in my world some days everyone is relatively put together & others one child looks homeless because it was just NOT worth it to fight her to put a clip in her hair & you then let her ride in a completely unsafe way in the cart because hey, at least that’ll get you in the direction of the checkout counter whereas 10 minutes prior she was having a complete meltdown in the tile aisle.

Know what I mean? It was that kind of day.

I could not be more overwhelmed by everything on my plate today but sometimes all it takes is your husband putting a video of a compilation of cats with vacuums on to make you smile & say, ‘whatever.’

Hopefully if you’re having a rough day that will help you not take it too seriously.

Do Backstreet Boys like Pirates?

Our sitter Kim is a HUGE Backstreet Boys fan so when we found out P was doing an in house interview/concert with them at the station today we knew her head would explode if we got her in. Especially since it would be the first time she would actually meet ‘her future husband’ Nick Carter. The thing is Kim has the crappiest luck. She’s that girl that the most random things go wrong with & you just shake your head & say, “Only Kim…”

Kim’ older sister Kelly is one of my best friends & for her birthday over the weekend we all went to see Zac Brown Band. Towards the end of the show Kim started complaining that her eye hurt & it wouldn’t stop tearing up. By 3am she was miserable & went to the urgent care center. Somehow she had gotten an ulcer on her cornea! The night before meeting her husband she not only was in pain & couldn’t see but she also looked like she had some wicked case of a contagious gunky eye disease. Not exactly ideal for falling in love.

So I made her this…

Totally rockin’ right?? But I guess this isn’t the look she was going for…

For the actual meeting she decided to suffer through wearing eye liner & only put a contact in her good eye. I’m amazed she didn’t walk into any walls. I don’t know if Nick fell in love or not, TMZ is not currently reporting that he’s left his fiance. Maybe if she would’ve worn the patch like I told her to, you never know when someone’s gonna have a secret pirate fetish.

Also I did get a little giddy starstruck & had to steal a few quick pics myselfOh & don’t you worry, that puffy paint will be put to good use later on this week, I’m doing a campaign with Tulip Paints to bring pack puffy paints & I’m SO gonna rock it. I was the QUEEEEN of the puffy paint oversized white tee with a neon t-shirt clip. ROCKED. IT.

Judge Not Lest Ye Will Find out You’re Actually Judging Yourself

Sound confusing? Well, truth be told, it kind of is. Often these ‘ah-ha’ moments I have are required to travel through a bunch of murk & fog in the puzzle of my mind before they actually make sense. Then however I get to that magical point where I go, “Oh, ok, wow, I totally get that.” And then I want to share it with you…so here’s my nugget for the week. (which makes me giggle because we use the word ‘nugget’ in our house when someone is backed up & poops little rocks. “Uh-oh, you have nugget poop, better eat your veggies!” TMI?)

Anyway, the other day one of my good friends & I were discussing possible playdates over texts, she asked if her daughter could come play with Soph & I said no because my sitter had taken Sam & Soph to swim lessons & then was going to the diner for dinner. She responded with something like, “Ok, nevermind. You are really lucky to have so much free time.” That statement was one of those that totally made my head pop back from the phone & as I re-read it a few times I could feel my face getting hot. So much free time? FREE TIME? What does she think, I’m eating bon-bons & painting my toenails over here?

Perhaps I should give you a little background first, and my close friends including the one above know this too. P & I decided that I would take the summer to try & use my blog to create a job for myself. You’ve probably noticed the Martha Stewart sponsored ads that have popped up at the top of the site & also a little further down on the right sidebar. I’ll be completely honest with you, those pay around $100 a week if I blog around 3-4 times. Have you seen the Houzz.com ideabook that’s been living on the right side of my page for the last year or so? I get paid to come up with those ideabooks & let them live on my page. (which by the way you should totally try making a Houzz Ideabook, it’s like grown up picture books, love them!) I also belong to an ad network called Blueprint Social that hooks me up with brands that are applicable to my site & they pay me to review their usually crafting items & post about it. Those go for anywhere from $50-$200 each depending on how much work is involved. I’m telling you all this because that roughly adds up to $600 a month off of my blog. That’s $7,200 a year. Hardly a salary for even the crappiest of part time jobs. Don’t get me wrong, it’s some awesome extra money BUT to create the type of posts I do, videos, tutorials, recipes with graphics, takes time, like 2-3 hours per post, & that requires a sitter my friend. I haven’t done the math but I’m pretty sure I’m not even breaking even with the profit verses sitter costs. That’s why i decided around a month ago that I wanted to take the next step & open a shop. A place where what you see on the blog (and some extras!) can be available for purchase. I love love love what I do. I just need to find a way to turn it into a real paying job to justify the time it requires. Know what I mean? And that’s exactly what my goal for the summer is.

So when my friend who knows all of that said to me, “You are really lucky to have so much free time” it really bothered me. It actually bothered me A LOT. My personality is that I get angry or hurt quickly but it rarely lingers, quick to anger & quick to let it go. This though, this one stuck with me, I found myself harping on it in my brain all throughout the last few days. I would think, “Why would she say that to me? Does she think I’m just playing around? Is she saying I’m just pawning my kids off with a sitter instead of taking care of them myself like she & all the other stay at home moms I know do?” And after a good while of having this very one-sided conversation in my head I realized something…that’s not what my friend thinks of me, that’s what I think of me. And there’s where the a-ha comes in, I really believe that often when someone says something that really bothers you it might just be because it’s a way you feel insecure about yourself.

I think it’s a great thing that I’m trying to create a part time job that I love. It makes me happy & fulfilled. I also visualize myself being done with work & spending time with the kids when they get home from school or if one is sick I can have the flexibility to nurture them all day without having to ‘call in’ to work. It would be a good set up. Not to mention when I take a few hours for me, to be away from my children & be doing something that I enjoy it truly makes me a better mother when I’m done & it’s time to spend with them. I snap at them less. I actually want to play ponies. I’m completely interested & engaged in what they have to say…& I believe it’s because I’ve already been fulfilled & that enables me to have something to give.

BUT…

The guilt of someone else being with my kids instead of me just eats me alive. Seriously, I feel a pang of guilt every time they leave the house with our sitter & not me. Let me say too, I ADORE our sitter, I would seriously adopt her as my little sister if she weren’t already 23 & in no need of new parents or siblings. The girls love her too, they get bummed on the days she doesn’t come. Yet the guilt persists. One of the last things I said is a perfect example of this, that the girls are bummed when our sitter doesn’t come over…you would think this would be a relief to me because it means that my children are having a great time but nope, the first thing I think of is, “Am I doing such a bad job when it’s my turn to take care of them that they want the babysitter instead?” Mommy Guilt…it’s a Bit@h.

This morning I talked to my friend about all of this because 1- I think it’s healthy to talk with someone who has hurt you instead of becoming resentful. 99% of the time they probably have no idea they did it. 2- I certainly didn’t want her to read this flood of emotions that all stemmed from her text over the internet! That would not be cool. In talking with each other she shared with me that she was probably a little envious when she made the comment because she doesn’t have that ‘free time’ a sitter provides. She’s also a blogger but has no time to keep it up. Do you know what keeps her from getting a sitter more? Mommy Guilt. The feeling that she should be the one with the kids.

In the end there has to be a balance & I think as mothers we are constantly chasing after that perfect balance of taking care of our children’s needs while not forgetting our own. It’s a viscous teeter totter that seems like it’s constantly needing adjustment but THAT’S OK. That’s mommyhood. So that’s about it, I can’t say my guilt is gone but at least now I’ve acknowledged that my anger about the text was not because of my friend, it was because of how I feel about me. And you know what, that’s something I can do something about.
