Bananahead Baby Hat (Free Pattern!)

Before I tell you about the hat can I force you to look at, I mean sharrrre with you a few pics of my little monster & mini monster?

I keep trying to think of a caption for that last photo but all I’m hearing are crickets. Can you come up with one??

Now onto the hat…
When we first moved to DC I didn’t know a soul however one of P’s new co-workers had heard I was into knitting. Being a fellow knitter she sent him home from his 1st day at work with a gift bag for me. It had some beautiful lilac yarn, knitting needles & a pattern for these awesome fingerless gloves. I instantly knew we’d be friends. (:

Lara moved to New York a few years ago but when Samster was born she made her the cutest baby hat. Now that it’s getting chilly Sophie’s inherited it & Lara was nice enough to let me share the free pattern with you guys.

This pattern is on Ravelry.com along with 1,000’s of other ones, many are free, go check it out. It’s completely free & just waiting to be your BFF. OH! And the fingerless gloves, they’re from knitty.com, yet another amazingly awesome freeeeee knitting website. Crafters sure are nice people.

Bananahead Baby Hat Pattern

Sizes:
Newborn (0-3months, 3-6months)

Materials:
Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino (55% Merino, 33% Microfiber and 12% Cashmere, 137yds/50g) 1(1) – 1 set of 5 size US4 DPNs (or size needed to obtain gauge) – 1 stitch holder
Darning needle

Gauge:
6 stitches/9rows/inch, in the round.

Cast on 84 stitches. Divide evenly over 4 needles.
Row 1: *K2, P2. Repeat from * to end.
Join, being careful not to twist.
Repeat K2, P2 rib as above for 2”. Then, continue in ss until work measures 5”(5.5”, 6”) from cast-on edge.
Begin decreases as follows:
Round 1: *K5, K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (72 stitches) Round 2: *K4, K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (60 stitches)
Round 3: *K3, K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (48 stitches) Round 4: *K2, K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (36 stitches) Round 5: *K1, K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (24 stitches) Round 6: *K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (12 stitches) Round 7: *K2tog. Repeat from * to end. (6 stitches)
Place 3 stitches on a holder. (3 stitches)
With 3 stitches left on the needle, knit 5” of icord. Fasten off and weave in end.
Move remaining 3 stitches from holder onto needle. Knit 5” of icord. Fasten off and weave in end.
Weave in all remaining ends. Tie the two icords into a pretty little bow and you’re DONE! !

  1. Very cute! I love your beautiful girls matching monster outfits! We have just entered the world of matching outfits, too. My five year old daughter loves to match her baby sister. It is a lot of fun!

  3. Aww, so cute! I'm such a sucker for matching outfits. And coordinating outfits. The one reason I haven't got a gigantic wardrobe for Baby #2 right now is maaaaybe just because I haven't been buying things unless I can find something with similar colors/patterns in the bigger littlegirl section for my three year old? It's a sickness. Matching jammies/boots/sweaters/shirts/dresses? check! I'm a sick, sick individual. And hats, we just won't talk about how many colors of matching hats I've crocheted, mostly from the Aesthetic Nest crocheted cloche baby and big girl patterns.
    I honestly can't think of anything but crickets when looking at the last picture just because you said that. My brain was in the middle of it's usual monologue to itself, and then just *chirp chirp*

  6. What comes to my ming is something like this:
    Samster: Remember I am the big sister and all of the fun toys are mine.
    I remember my oldest daughter telling my son something like that. (They are 8 yrs apart.)

  21. How do I eliminate the last six stitches of this hat, as I would like to make just a beanie hat for a newborn. Thank you and you children are beautiful!

    • Hmm, I’m not sure as I didn’t write the pattern but I’m thinking you could pull your yarn through your last 6 stitches & pull it closed. I love knitty.com for a bunch of free patterns, you could probably find some instructions for a beanie there but I gotta tell you, I really think just cinching them shut at the end should work. Good luck!
