I couldn’t really think of an appropriate name for this project, “tank top bra” isn’t quite it. I guess it’s more like a layering tank that only covers your boobs? Kind of? Ok, you know when you want to wear a summer dress but you need a little coverage underneath so you layer it over a tank top? But when you do that does it ever drive you crazy that the tank top rides up under your dress? Or it leaves a big fat line under your dress where you tank cuts across your muffin top? *Not that you HAVE a a muffin top but if you DID than maybe it would be a an unflattering place for a tank to cut across…
I’ve always had this problem but with a big ol’ preggers belly it’s worse times 10. I’m constantly tugging at the tank under my dress…that’s where I came up with this little idea…
And under what would otherwise be a “welcome to the boob show dress”….
Here’s how I did it. You’re gonna die when you see how easy it is.
You’ll need: 1 tank top, 1 piece of elastic long enough to fit around your rib cage. (mine was 1/2″ wide)
First, cut the tank top 13 & 1/2″ from the top. (you can adjust this if your tata’s are particularly large or small…try on the tank if you’d like & just mark where it stops under your bust)
Next stitch the two edges of your elastic together, being careful not to twist, so you have one big loop. (stitch several times back & forth to make sure it’s a good hold)
THAT’S IT! Seriously, you’re done. I know, right? Pretty darn great.

I am doing this with my tanks now. Much better than a sports bra that will squish what I have and I can wear my push up bra underneath.

Awesome! It would be useful for nursing too, only having to juggle one shirt instead of two layers.
Brilliant! All my maternity dresses/shirts require tanks underneath, not all of us double in size on top. And it's too hot to be sporting 2 shirts every day. Hmm, wonder how many should I make?

Great Idea. I often layer a little t-shirt or cap sleeved shirt under summer dresses, but I have an hourglass figure and my shirts all end up rolling up to my waistline and bunching up. I'm going to try this!
Perfect!! I am super self-conscious about accidentally flashing skin, so I wear tanks and camisoles under pretty much everything. But especially since it's so dang hot here, this would be a way better option. Now I just need to find some good-looking tanks to saw in half. 😉

I love this Idea, My Muffin Top always gets the better of me, I am going to have to try this and see how it looks cause I love dresses and wearing them to work but sometimes I need extra coverage.

This is a great post. I usually just put a sports bra over my regular bra, but this is so much better! This is something so many women will appreciate because I'm sure we have ALL been there!

Very nice and simple. Your dress looks great with it… I can imagine that it would have been almost a x-rated shot without the tank top.
great idea! is that a recent photo of the bump? looking good! i heard you/your husband on the radio this morning btw arguing about sleep with a baby. having a 6 week old, i am totally on your side, my husband thinks he never gets enough sleep when he wakes up maybe once a night and me about 3 times! =/

You totally inspired me. I had a tank top that was annoying me because it was not long enough to layer, but was a shelf bra / covered up the ladies in cleavage showing shirts. So I sewed the top layer of the shirt onto the elastic on the shelf part and voila – perfect tank top bra.
