Is it just me or does everyone not have the heart to throw away the actually jewelry box that a special gift came in? I find them in junk drawers or tucked away in the closet, but can never bring myself to actually trash them. That’s when I came up with the idea below…
It took all of 10 minutes to do and now I can admire my keepsake box while giving it purpose. The top is a pincushion while the box holds all of my little sewing doodads like snaps, extra needles or buttons. Sigh. I love when things work out like that. (:
Keepsake Pin Cushion Box:
Hot Glue Gun
Jewelry Box with stuffing insert
Fabric square
Stuffing
Step one, cut your fabric square so it will comfortably ‘wrap’ the cover of your jewelry box. For me that was around 2″ longer and wider than the actual lid.
Two, take the fluffy insert from the box bottom and glue it to the lid.
Three, tightly pull the fabric square over the top of the lid and glue down one side.
Repeat with two of the other sides, pulling tight and folding the corners in before gluing down. Kind of like you’re wrapping a present. At this point you should have one side left open, use this to push in as much stuffing as you can until you get the pin cushion part as firm as you’d like. You can also manipulate the stuffing through this opening to get a nice dome effect.
Finally glue down the last side, fill box with sewing notions and enjoy your sentimental handiwork.
